Split PDF online for free. Equal parts or custom page ranges, ZIP download. Extract chapters or pages easily. No signup, files auto-deleted.
How your file is handled
Splitting happens over HTTPS-protected uploads and downloads. Your source PDF and the resulting ZIP only exist for this one task and are wiped within an hour, with download links expiring at the same time.
When this tool fits best
- Pull a single clause out of a long contract
Send only the relevant pages of an annex to legal instead of forwarding the entire agreement.
- Slice a textbook into chapters
Cut a hundred-page e-textbook into chapter-sized files so you can hand them to different classes or LMS units.
- Save just the pages required by an agency
Extract only the pages from a scanned medical or government PDF that an insurer or agency actually needs.
Features
- Page thumbnails up front
Thumbnails for every page appear after upload so you can pick split points visually.
- Split by count or by ranges
Split evenly into N parts, or list multiple page ranges like 1-3, 5, 8-12.
- ZIP packed delivery
All output PDFs are bundled into a single ZIP so you don't have to download dozens of files.
- Predictable file naming
Outputs are named by their page span (e.g. part_1-3.pdf) so they sort and script nicely.
- Per-subset bookmarks
If the source has bookmarks, the bookmarks within each subset's page range are preserved.
- Non-contiguous ranges
Ranges may skip pages, e.g. 1-3, 5, 10-12 produces three independent subsets.
How to use
- 1Upload the source PDF
Drop in or pick a multi-page PDF up to 500MB.
- 2Preview and decide split points
Use the page count and thumbnails to plan how to cut it.
- 3Enter the split parameters
Pick "split into N equal parts" or "by page ranges" and fill in the values.
- 4Generate and download a ZIP
Once finished, download the ZIP and unzip to get the individual PDFs.
Limits and things to watch out for
- Overlapping ranges duplicate pages— If two ranges overlap, the overlapping pages appear in both subsets.
- Page granularity only— We split at full-page boundaries; sub-page splitting isn't supported.
- Mind the ZIP size— Try to keep the resulting ZIP under 500MB; if larger, split in batches instead.
- No automatic split-by-bookmark yet— Auto-splitting along bookmarks or chapters is still on the roadmap; today you list ranges manually.
FAQ
- QHow do I list multiple non-contiguous ranges?
- In "by page ranges" mode separate ranges with commas, e.g. 1-3, 5, 8-12 produces three subset PDFs.
- QHow are output files named?
- By page span by default, e.g. part_1-3.pdf; in equal-split mode they are part_1.pdf, part_2.pdf, etc.
- QCan ranges overlap?
- Yes — the overlapping pages will appear in each subset.
- QWill the original PDF change?
- No, splitting only produces new output files; the source is left untouched.
- QCan I merge the subsets back together?
- Yes — feed them into the Merge tool in the desired order.
- QCan I split by bookmarks automatically?
- Not yet; for now list page ranges manually. Auto-by-bookmark is on the roadmap.
- QCan I split encrypted PDFs?
- Decrypt them first.
- QWill huge files time out?
- A few hundred pages typically finish within 1-3 minutes; otherwise narrow the page range.
After splitting, compress or merge the subsets
Once you've split, you can compress an individual subset down for email, or feed several subsets through the merge tool to rearrange them.
